SOFIA EJDEROS

I'm a trained scenic artist and also working as a mixed media artist, born and raised in Sweden to an English mother and Swedish father. Currently working in creating West End theatre as well as commercial ventures and taking on own art commissons. Travelled to the UK in 2005 to study Art Foundation at Bournemouth Arts Institute, where I was awarded a Distinction. I moved to Bristol in 2006 to study Animation BA(hons), awarded a 2:1 from the University of the West of England. In 2013-2014 I studied at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and received a Post Graduate Diploma in Scenic Art. Living in England, my main specialism is working in theatre for the West End and beyond, fringe theatres, commercial displays, scenic finishes, installations, murals and festival builds across the UK.

Prior to my scenic art career, whilst working as a runner at Films@59, a group of us won an award in 2011 for a short film I directed and produced called  'A Wheeling Love Story' for the Encounters 0117 Film Competition, shooting the film over 117 hours. link here:  https://youtu.be/wzfPC0f9l-k?feature=shared

In 2014 I started working full-time for Richard Nutbourne Scenic Studio in Surrey. During my time there I regularly lead teams as workshop supervisor on various shows like Frozen the Musical and also as head painter on other projects like Lady Day at the Wyndham Theatre designed by Christopher Oram. I also worked extensively on various cloths and scenery for operas at Glyndebourne, shows for the West End and ballets across the country.  I worked there until the summer of 2021 when I went freelance.

Since then I have taught a scenic art short course at Mountview Academy of Theatrical Arts, London, whilst also working with the students on their projects. I have worked on various projects with Pyrite Creative; festival and commercial installations such as the Red Bull Soap Box Races at Alexandra Palace. Also at Giffords Circus, based in the Cotswolds, painting their sets and props. Rocket Scenery, in Nottingham, is another workshop where I have frequently painted various shows for the West End and Chichester Festival Theatre.  Further to this, I take on fine art commissions,  mural prospects, theatre projects, portraits and other artistic visions.

Based in my art studio near Cirencester, my own practise comprises of intricate line drawings, portraits in mixed media and experimenting with various artforms including lighting, photography and textures. I find beauty in the decay of nature and inspiration in the way nature envelopes man-made objects, such as old buildings with its spores and mould, creepers and roots. Influenced by my upbringing in the countryside in Sweden, with its dark mysterious forests and lakes.
